Ready for the Road? Why April Is the Time to Service Your Camper

Tuesday 24th March 2026

April is the month when campervan and motorhome owners are looking ahead to weekends away, bank holiday breaks and longer summer trips. It is also the month when reality needs to catch up with ambition, camper and motorhome servicing should be in owners minds. There is no point planning the perfect escape if the vehicle itself has not been properly prepared for the season.

A lot can happen while a camper or motorhome is standing still. Tyres lose pressure, batteries discharge, seals dry out, and small damp issues can become expensive ones if they go unnoticed. That is why April feels like the right moment to act. The weather is improving, the season is beginning, and there is still time to sort things before your diary fills up.

There are some sensible checks every owner can do themselves. Start with the basics. Check tyre pressures and inspect the sidewalls for cracking or damage. Do not forget the spare. Recharge and test both the vehicle battery and the leisure battery. Run the water system through, flush it properly, and make sure there are no leaks around taps, pumps or pipework. Test the lights, wipers and washers. Open every locker, inspect the seals and look carefully for any signs of damp or water ingress. Give the vehicle a proper clean as well, because dirt can hide problems and a clean motorhome makes it much easier to spot them.

Inside, it is worth checking that appliances are working as they should, especially after a period of winter storage. Heating, fridge operation, gas systems and electrical functions all need attention before you head off and hope for the best. It is always better to find a fault on your driveway than on the first trip of the year.

But here is the thing. Owner checks are useful, and they absolutely have their place, but they are not a substitute for proper servicing. This time of year, servicing means you are ready for a trouble free season. That is the real priority.

At Oldfields, we know how easy it is for people to focus on the fun bits first. Packing the kit, planning the route, booking the site. Yet the smartest owners do it the other way round. They make sure the mechanical side is right, the safety checks are done, and the vehicle is fit for purpose before the adventures begin.

A campervan or motorhome is there to give you freedom. Proper servicing helps protect that freedom. It gives you confidence, reduces the risk of breakdowns, and helps make sure your season starts for the right reasons. April is the perfect time to do it.

The unseen service that saves lives: ADAS calibration done properly

Saturday 1st November 2025

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) aren’t a fad, they’re now woven into everyday motoring. Parking sensors that chirp at low speeds, through to blind-spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition, up to adaptive cruise, lane keep and automatic emergency braking that can intervene quicker than most humans. At the sharper end you’ll find 360° camera stitching, radar and camera sensor fusion and, on some premium models,  mapping the road in remarkable detail. However clever the badge on the boot, all of these features rely on one uncompromising truth. The hardware must be correctly calibrated to the car if it’s going to behave as expected in all circumstances.

Yes, driverless cars are coming. We’re inching forward with more autonomy and better software over the air. But between today’s reality and tomorrow’s robotaxi sit millions of cars and vans that depend on cameras behind windscreens, radars in bumpers and ultrasonic sensors in mirror housings. A windscreen replacement, a suspension job or a kerb strike can nudge a sensor a few millimetres off axis. That’s enough to move a lane line, slow an emergency response or cause distance control to surge when it should smooth things out. This is not a gadget conversation. It is about the safety of your family in that vehicle.

Are we new to ADAS?

In short, no. At Oldfields, we’ve been able to carry out some ADAS calibrations right here in Leominster, for a number of years, but we’ve been investigating enhanced ADAS solutions. We’re delighted to announce that from January 2026 we’re launching a comprehensive ADAS calibration solution that brings the whole process in-house, end to end. We will follow the correct OE references for targets, positions, ride height and load. We will use quality equipment that is verified and maintained, in controlled lighting on a level floor. Static and dynamic procedures will be completed as specified, with documented pre and post scans, and a road test to confirm the system behaves as expected in the real world.

Shortcuts create risk. Generic settings, guesswork or bargain kit that drifts out of tolerance can all undermine the very systems designed to protect you. Our approach is simple. Use OE data, use calibrated tools, record the results and explain the work.

Why should you do it properly?

There’s a customer experience piece here too. Like choosing a trusted barber or hairdresser, drivers want consistency, transparency and a result that leaves them confident to face the day. We’ll tell you what needs doing, why it matters and what it costs before we begin. ADAS isn’t going anywhere, and neither is our responsibility to keep local vehicles safe, predictable and pleasant to drive. If your car warns, watches or intervenes, proper calibration with the right references and equipment is essential.

Oldfields Support ELY Memorial Fund at their Annual Young Drivers Experience

Wednesday 23rd July 2025

Oldfields Garage is once again uniting the UK’s automotive aftermarket in support of the ELY Memorial Fund’s annual Young Driver Experience, taking place from 21 – 25 July at Herefordshire, Ludlow & North Shropshire College.

Now a cornerstone of the fund’s road safety efforts, the five-day event is aimed at educating 14 to 17-year-olds across Herefordshire about the responsibilities of driving. It combines practical driving sessions on a closed course with interactive workshops covering essential topics such as basic car maintenance, first aid, and the dangers of drink- and drug-driving, delivered in partnership with West Mercia Police.

Tim will deliver a series of talks on proactive vehicle maintenance, helping attendees understand how regular checks and upkeep contribute directly to road safety.

“The Young Driver Experience is really about setting young people up with good habits from the start,” said Tim. “When I talk to them about car maintenance, it’s about helping them realise that safety starts before you even turn the key. It’s about knowing your car, spotting problems early, and taking responsibility every time, you get behind the wheel.”

This year’s event is supported by several leading automotive brands, reflecting the industry’s shared commitment to supporting future drivers. Castrol, PAGID, Schaeffler, HELLA, LKQ Euro Car Parts and Ring have all donated giveaways, which Tim will be awarding as prizes during the vehicle maintenance sessions.

“I’m really grateful to the brands who’ve come on board to support this year’s event,” Tim added. “Their generosity helps make the sessions more engaging for those taking part, and it shows that the wider industry truly cares about educating the next generation of drivers. Every attendee will take away a goodie bag with items from the Automotive Aftermarket and those that really engage will get a extra special bag with wireless headphones, speakers and more!”

The ELY Memorial Fund was established in memory of Emma Louise Young, who tragically lost her life in a road collision at the age of 23. Alongside offering financial support to local families who have lost a child in a road traffic accident, the fund is committed to reducing fatalities among young drivers through early education and awareness.

Ange Tyler, founder of the ELY Memorial Fund and mother of Emma, said: “We’re delighted to see the Young Driver Experience grow year on year, with continued backing from people like Tim and his industry partners. The goal is to reach young people before they get behind the wheel, to shape attitudes and save lives.”

Why should you aim for more than the minimum standard?

Friday 23rd May 2025

car outline page divider

At Oldfields, we are acutely aware that the MOT is merely a snapshot of a vehicle’s condition on the day of testing. It confirms that, at that moment, the car met the minimum legal safety and environmental standards. We believe in providing more than that! Vehicles are dynamic machines, and their condition can change rapidly with use and also through lack of use.

Relying solely on the MOT can lead to unforeseen issues. For instance, a component might pass the MOT but be close to its wear limit, leading to potential failures shortly after the test. This reactive approach can result in unexpected breakdowns, inconvenient repairs, and increased costs.

By maintaining a vehicle to a higher standard than the MOT minimum, we adopt a proactive approach. Regular servicing and thorough inspections allow us to identify and address potential issues before they escalate. This not only enhances the vehicle’s reliability but also provides peace of mind to our customers.

Moreover, a well-maintained vehicle often performs more efficiently, offering better fuel economy and reduced emissions. It also tends to have a higher resale value, as prospective buyers recognize the benefits of consistent upkeep.

At Oldfields, our commitment is to ensure that every vehicle we take care of is not just roadworthy. We also provide a vehicle inspection that takes into account performance and longevity as we don’t believe in working to a minimum standard. We provide our customers with comprehensive care that keeps their vehicles running smoothly and safely throughout the year, enabling them to plan more effectively with minimum unplanned downtime.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not actively looking for new start apprentices at the moment, however if you have already started an apprenticeship and are in a workplace that you don’t feel values or supports you, please do get in contact.

We’re looking for the future of Oldfields! Are you the right fit to join our Award Winning Team as an apprentice technician?

We’re keen for the best people to join our business and we have great success in helping apprentices progress and develop, offering opportunities for additional training and a great working environment. Take Owen for example, who is Level 3 Electric Vehicle Qualified before he has even completed his full apprenticeship.

You’ll firstly need to be interested in vehicles and their maintenance. We are looking for a good attitude, able to communicate effectively and a strong willingness to learn and develop. We’ll be inviting successful applicants for a trial run so you can spend some time in the workshop working alongside one of our team.

Who is this for?

We’re keen to get the right person to join us and would consider a school leaver, someone who has completed a year at college on the full time course or someone who has worked in industry but is looking for a better environment with more opportunities to develop.

How should you apply?

If you’d like to be considered for an apprentice position with us email your CV along with a short paragraph on why you’d like to work with Oldfields to tim@oldfieldsgarage.co.uk.

When should you apply?

Don’t leave it too late to apply, we’ve filled one position and once we’ve filled the next position it’s gone! We’re looking to make sure we have an apprentice ready for this September intake with the aim of bringing someone into our team sooner rather than later.
